The philosophy of The Exploration Project is very simple, generally we feel that the music of today is too formated, too structured, too geared towards The Commercial, too sales orriented, too safe, too categorized, too melodious, too easily understood, too without risk and to many other things that we do not need to mention.
There is a new or old breed of composers/artists/musicians out there; ones who have not bought into this game. These people are "the true keepers of the musical faith." To them, creating art is more important than commercial success and these people will not sell out! As members of The Exploration Project, we feel that we can criticize the current state of affairs in music today because of our vast historical experiences living though the 1950s and 1960s, a period in history where experimentation in musical forms and or genre took place. How many remakes of popular songs from that era are currently being played on the radio, or performed on various new artists cds or used in their performances; then you come to the conclusion that the music industry is not that interested in pushing the envelop on creativity. The Industry will only support what they know will sell and what was once interesting and sellable has now become boring and repetitive.
The Exploration Project is not the spokesperson for this new breed of artist. We too are listeners of music. I personally, listen to over 50 hours of music weekly. The goal of The Exploration Project is to play our type of music; that is to say a music that engages, challenges, shakes up, stimulates and attacks the listeners ears! We are not sugar coated; but we can be sweet! This is our philosophy and although we might please people our real objective is to challenge our listeners to think and the musicians to play. I hope that these ideas are not too bold! Never the less, this is who we are and what I think we are about.
